How to Make an American Flag Balloon Wall

Riles & Bash How to Make an American Flag Balloon Wall

Creating an American Flag Balloon Wall is a fun way to create a unique display, and it's much easier than you might think.

We've got the step by step instructions on how to put it all together.

Here's what you're going to need:

- Handheld Balloon Pump (included with your Kit)
- A curtain rod (or something similar) to hang the balloons from *or somewhere to hang the balloons from
- Strong tape (i.e. clear packing tape)
- If you're making your American Flag wall outside you'll want stakes (or something similar) and string to secure the bottom of your American Flag wall to the ground

Here's a video look at the Red, White and Blue Link balloons:
PRO TIP:
Having a helper or two will make things go much faster.

STEP 1. Choose the location to hang your American Flag Balloon Wall

Whether you're using this display for the backdrop to your event, behind your feature tables, or as a prop for your guests to take photos in front of, this American Flag Balloon wall should be a focal point of your event.

Find a spot where you can easily hang the links from and where your guests will get to enjoy this fun patriotic sight.

You may already have somewhere that you can hang the links from, and if so you can move on to Step 2.  If not, you'll need to prepare where the balloons are going to hang from.

If you are using a curtain rod like we did, secure it in place so that it's ready to hang your balloons.

PRO TIP:
If you're using a curtain rod, adjust it to be a little wider than the width of the flag.

If you are assembling your balloon flag in one location and moving it to the final spot, we recommend securing the sliding part of your curtain rod (if it's an extendable one) with some tape to secure the sliding pieces in place so it won't shift while you're making the move.

STEP 2.  Decide on the size of your American Flag Balloon Wall

Once you know where you're going to put it, decide how wide and high you are going to make your flag wall.

The location of where you want to put your American Flag Balloon wall may dictate the size that you can make it or if you have a large enough space you can make it a show stopping display.  No matter the size your guests are going to love it.

In our example, we made a BIG flag and used 1 balloon kit and still had some extras left over, but you could make a smaller display and have balloons left over to use as a garland, and to have extras on hand in case any balloons pop.

PRO TIP:
If you're making a show stopping display, make sure you order enough balloons to make your garlands.

We recommend attaching both ends of the curtain rod, as well as the middle, so the rod doesn’t shift or lean to one side or another.

Make sure you leave yourself some extras in case any balloons pop and you need to replace them.

STEP 3. Blow up the Balloons

Blow up each vertical balloon garland with the balloons linked together top to bottom.

For example, start on the left side of the flag with blue balloons, then alternate red and white to the desired length/height that your flag is going to be.

Take your first blue link balloon and start blowing it up by holding the opening of the balloon tight around the tip of the balloon pump.

Once you've got it blown up to the desired size, start to wrap the opening of the balloon around your fingers as if you are going to tie it.

Before you pull the opening of the balloon through the loop of your knot, place the tail of your next balloon between your two fingers beside the opening of the first balloon.

Then when you finishing tying the knot the balloons will be linked together.

Alternatively, you can blow up and tie the balloons separately and then tie them together after.

Once you've linked the next balloon, you can start to blow it up.

Then repeat until you've finished all of the vertical links that will make up your flag.

STEP 4. Hang your Garlands

Once you have your garlands blown up it's time to start hanging.

Start at the very left of where you are going to hang your garlands from and start attaching them one by one.

We used packing tape to secure the top of each balloon string to the curtain rod. For each string, we used a generous 3 inch piece of packing tape to give good sticky coverage & taped the top linking portion of the top balloon to the curtain rod.

If you are displaying the balloon flag outside, consider weather, heat and wind. It’s best to avoid the balloons from being in direct outside sunlight as it may affect their lifespan.

Once you've got your balloon garlands hung, the final step is to tie strings to the bottom of the balloons and anchor them to the ground with stakes or something similar.  This will make sure that your American Flag balloon wall stays in place.

PRO TIPS:
In case of a popped balloon, you can replace the single balloon within the assembled string as needed.  Alternatively, you can have a couple extra strands blown up to replace a whole vertical row.

And that's it!  You're American Flag Balloon Wall is complete.
