Create a Decadent Magical Wizard Dessert Board in 3 Easy Steps

Create a Decadent Magical Wizard Dessert Board in 3 Easy Steps

Charcuterie boards are the perfect centrepiece to your party food table.  They showcase a variety of foods that everyone can enjoy AND they look great.

If you're hosting a themed event or hosting friends for a specific occasion, a charcuterie board can be done for pretty much any theme: Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter...

For this charcuterie board, we got inspired by the beloved Harry Potter series.  There are lots of different treats in the movies to choose from, and magical elements to get creative with, so we designed a decadent Harry Potter Charcuterie Board.  This would be great to add to your Harry Potter Party.

Here is How to Create a Harry Potter Inspired Charcuterie Board in 3 Easy Steps:

STEP 1: Pick your Charcuterie Board

1. Pull out any boards or platters that you have.  Select the one that best suits the theme and is a good size for your event.

For our charcuterie board we used a large round platter from Magnolia's Hearth & Hand Collection from Target (this isn't a promo, we just love this board).  We chose it because it's large, has a rim, and it's food safe.

If you don't have a charcuterie board, here are some in all different shapes and sizes to consider.

PRO TIP:

If you have multiple boards to pick from, keep them in mind while you're shopping for your treats.  You may decide to change up which board you use, or you may want to create multiple boards if you find something amazing to include that wasn't originally on your shopping list.

STEP 2: Plan out your Sweet Treats

Decide which sweet treats you want to include on your charcuterie board and make a shopping list.  A good variety of treats to include are:

  • chocolates
  • caramels
  • cookies
  • cupcakes, and
  • candies

This should satisfy everyone's sweet tooth. You can also include some fruit like we did for good measure ;)

Having a variety of treats will also make sure that your charcuterie board not only tastes good but also looks good.  You don't just want a whole board of chocolate, well maybe you do, but different sweets and colors will add visual interest to your board.

There are various ways to bring the Harry Potter elements to life.  It just depends on what your guests might enjoy most, and what you can find in your local area.  For example, magic wands could be licorice sticks, Pirouettes, chocolate covered pretzel sticks, or chocolate Pocky like we used.

You can bring to life the House colors with different colored jelly beans, candies, chocolates in colored packaging, or M&M's.

Here are the Harry Potter themed sweets that we included on our board to get your inspiration started:

  • Sorting Hat Cupcakes

  • Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Broomsticks
  • Gummy Quidditch Rings
  • Ferrero Rocher Golden Snitches

  • Chocolate Frogs **see our recipe below for how to create your very own**
  • Gringott's Gold Coins

  • Pocky Chocolate Wands
  • Hogwart's Cookie Letters
  • House Color M&M's
  • Gummy Slugs

PRO TIPS:

Not all of your treats need to be themed.  You can add other sweet treats that work with the theme.  For example, we used chocolate covered pretzels, pumpkin cookies, and caramels.

Be open to what you may come across at the store as you may get inspired while you're shopping.

Buy extra treats so that you can make sure your charcuterie board is full.  Any extra that you have can be added around your table in different containers if you choose.

STEP 3. BUILD YOUR CHARCUTERIE BOARD

Once you've bought all of your candy it's time to start placing where it's all going to go.

The key is to start with the largest items first as they take up the most space.  For our charcuterie board this was the Sorting Hat cupcakes.  We also added some caramel topped cupcakes that were too yummy looking to resist.

Then add any little containers of candy that you have.  We sorted blue, yellow, red and green M&M's into little bowls to represent the different Houses.

We also put our Pocky Chocolate Wands and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Broomsticks on little dishes and placed them onto the board.

Next we added some fruit to the charcuterie board.  We chose large bundles of grapes and blueberries but you could also break them up into smaller bundles and add them throughout.

Once you've placed your largest items and little bowls on the board it's time to start filling in the gaps with the rest of your treats.

For our charcuterie board that was the Chocolate Frogs, Gringott's Gold Coins, Ferrero Rocher Golden Snitches, Hogwart's Cookie Letters, Gummy Slugs, Gummy Quidditch Rings, and some other sweet treats that we felt deserved a place on the board like caramels, chocolate covered pretzels, pumpkin cookies, and chocolates wrapped in house colors.

PRO TIP:

Have fun with it!  Make adjustments to your board as needed so that you create a full looking board of decadent sweet treats.

HARRY POTTER INSPIRED CHOCOLATE FROGS

Making your own Chocolate Frogs is super simple and is a great addition to this Harry Potter inspired Charcuterie Board.

Makes: 6 chocolate frogs

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Cooling Time: 2 hours

Ready in: approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes

Supplies

1 x Silicone Chocolate Frog Mold

1 x Double Boiler *basically a smaller pot or heat resistant bowl that sits on top of a larger pot

Ingredients

1 x 12 oz. bag of milk chocolate chips

A couple inches of water in the bottom pot of your double boiler

Directions

1. Place your double boiler on medium heat with a couple inches of water in the bottom pot.

2. Place the chocolate chips into the top pot of your double boiler and stir continuously.  You want to ensure that the chocolate doesn't get too hot otherwise it will burn.  Mix until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.

5. Set the mold aside for a couple hours to harden.

6. Once the chocolate has hardened, you can gently peel the silicone mold away from the chocolate frogs.

7. If there are any white marks left from the chocolate cooling you can gently rub them away.

8. Add them to your Harry Potter Charcuterie Board and enjoy the oohs and ahhs!

These were bought from Safeway. They were pumpkin shaped and we found them prior to Halloween in the Bakery section. Good luck in creating a great board!
